Dulcinea Macgregor Craven is the only child of a wealthy English viscount. She is also a natural witch, one of a long line of Macgregor witches on her mother's side. When her parents are killed in a carriage accident, Dulcie doesn't think her life can get much worse. Then an old childhood friend returns to the country a little bit differently than he left and vows that nothing will stop him from possessing her and her magic.

In a desperate attempt to save her life, Dulcie summons a trio of vampires called The Righteous to her aid. With the help of The Righteous and four human friends, Dulcie attempts to thwart her enemy's plans to capture her and use her magic for his own evil purposes.

Even as she falls in love for the first time, Dulcie realizes that she may have to make the ultimate sacrifice in order to save the world.

I've never been a big fan of books with historical settings, but I decided to try this one. I wasn't disappointed. The lead character in this book is Dulcinea "Cin" Craven. She's a witch, but her powers were never awakened. When her parents die, her mother's energy forces her magic out. When a former childhood friend attacks her and she discovers that he's a vampire she decides to ask for help, so she summons The Righteous.

They are formed by 3 powerful vampires that battle evil: the leader is Devlin, the oldest and most powerful of the 3, he looks out for his friends and tries to help Cin the best he can; Justine is Devlin's "wife" and a lot of people fear her, she's also the one who understands Cin the best and helps her make a life changing decision and then there's Michael. He's the youngest and also Cin's love interest. You could say that it was love at first sight. He tries to protect Cin, but sometimes she doesn't need it. She reminds everyone that she's a powerful witch and can make her own decisions. Michael and Cin make a good match.

One of the things I liked best about this book is the villian. She's crazy, manipulative, powerful and sometimes a little stupid. You feel really connected to her because of the past she shares with Devlin. Also, I liked that Cin is a brave character in her own way. She's not perfect, is willing to accept help from others and is constantly trying to improve her ability to wield magic.

All is all, this book is a great start of a series, with a historical setting and a nice pace. You won't get bored while you read it.

Memorable Lines:

"I see you've met one of my kind," Michael said softly, his Scots brogue not as thick as it should have been, as if he'd lived a long time among the English. "What is it you want of me, lass? Vengeance? Shall I slay him for daring to lay his mouth on this pretty white flesh?"
There was a strange look on his face, a look of anger, of hunger, perhaps even of jealousy.
"No, I want you to slay him because he's going to kill me."
"Do you now?" He murmured.
"That is what you do, is it not? Protect the innocent?"
"And are you?" he asked, moving closer. His hand moved to my jaw, tilting my face up to his. His lips were so close. "Are you innocent?" He asked softly, and I had the feeling we were not talking about the same thing.

I just recently added this book to my wish list. I read a short story in the anthology Strange Brew and really liked the characters here. Glad to see it is a good read. Thank you!
